Raja Ampat Freedive Society is an independent freediving voyage curator operating in West Papua’s Raja Ampat archipelago — the world’s most biodiverse marine ecosystem at the apex of the Coral Triangle. Our 7-day private voyage covers Misool’s iconic karst lagoons, Dampier Strait’s manta cleaning stations, Wayag’s panoramic viewpoint, and Cape Kri’s record-breaking fish density. Three pricing tiers: Pilgrim (charter cabin share), Atelier (private cabin), Reserve (full charter exclusive). AIDA-certified safety briefings every morning. Eight pilgrims maximum per departure.

Raja Ampat Phinisi liveaboard freedive voyage Misool sunset Dampier Strait

What this voyage is

A 7-day, 6-night private freediving liveaboard expedition aboard a wooden-hulled Indonesian Phinisi schooner. Six guest cabins, six freedivers maximum, two AIDA-certified instructor-guides, a captain, four crew, a chef, and one safety freediver on every in-water session. Departure Sorong Saturday afternoon, return Sorong Friday morning. Two coached freediving sessions per day, one deep-line training session, optional sunrise apnea yoga, and the entire ocean at your disposal between sites.

Who it suits

This voyage targets serious freedivers — typically AIDA-2 certified or equivalent (PADI Freediver, Molchanovs Wave 2, SSI Level 2). Comfortable holding breath 60-90 seconds at rest. Comfortable equalising to at least 8m static. Comfortable in open ocean. We do not run this trip for first-time apneists; if you are at that stage, see our 3-day Sorong Foundation Course (separate, smaller boat, shore-based). For more on the certification pathway, read our instructor and certification briefing.

Why a private voyage, not a shared cabin

We sell the boat as a unit, not by the cabin. Six freedivers, ideally one closed group of friends or a serious dive club. The reason is simple: a freedive boat with seven strangers each on different breath-hold goals fragments coaching attention and creates safety drag. Six apneists working as a single unit synchronise dive plans, share safety duty, and progress further in seven days than fourteen days on a fragmented charter.

Safety briefing — what we promise

Every freediving session aboard our voyages follows AIDA International safety protocol. There is one trained safety freediver on every descent who does not dive simultaneously — they observe and recover. Surface-marker buoy with line on every depth session. Oxygen kit on deck, fully stocked, instructor trained in surface BLS and oxygen administration. We do not run untrained samba/loss-of-motor-control recovery — every guest signs an AIDA standard liability and informed consent. We carry an evacuation plan to Sorong hospital (helicopter or fast tender, distance-dependent). For Misool we maintain satellite communication with our Sorong base. We do not run unsupervised solo descents. Period. Read our freediving vs SCUBA briefing for context on apnea-specific risks.

What’s included, in detail

All meals: chef-prepared Indonesian + international, fresh seafood, vegetarian on request, dietary restrictions accommodated with two-week notice. All freediving sessions: two daily coached sessions plus one deep-line training, weights, lanyards, surface buoys provided. Marine Park entry fee paid by us. Sorong airport pickup and drop-off. Drinking water, coffee, tea, soft drinks unlimited. Wi-fi where coverage allows (limited Misool, decent Dampier). Onboard photography by safety freediver during sessions, free download. Full safety equipment: oxygen, first aid, evacuation plan, AIDA-certified instructors. Read more about which sites suit which level in our Misool spot briefing.

When to book — 2026 windows

We run three confirmed departures October 2026 – March 2027. October 18-25 (early dry season, Dampier-Misool full route), January 17-24 (peak manta season at Manta Sandy), March 14-21 (transitional, Misool-heavy itinerary). We open one or two additional charter dates by request — typically requires 6-month lead time and confirmed full charter (6 guests). The shoulder seasons of April-June and September are technically possible but currents tend to be stronger and water clarity reduced. Detailed seasonal analysis: when to come — month-by-month water and weather guide.
